LEA VALLEY U3A

Meetings held monthly at 'the Spotlight'
(formerly Broxbourne Civic Hall), in High Street, Hoddesdon

Tuesday, March 24th 2020

Dear Members,

I am writing to you all to keep you informed of the latest changes at Lea Valley U3A. In the light of the latest directives from the Government, I am sure you won’t be surprised to know that there will be no Main Meetings of LVU3A in April, May or June. [Update - see News page re July and August's main meeting arrangements].

In addition, John Mills' Fun Quiz planned for April has been postponed possibly until October, all being well, and the Cybercrime Information Event planned for Monday June 15th will not now take place.

During this time of self-isolation, it is important to do whatever we can to stay in touch with each other, whether by phone, letter, social media or video link. We at LVU3A are putting together a new-format newsletters which we will issue
in place of the normal versions. With more time on your hands, maybe you would like to consider writing something for us? I attach a list of suggestions which might set the creative juices flowing! (Click on the link to open):

Suggestions for Newsletter

Finally, our National Office, the Third Age Trust issues monthly online newsletters full of great ideas on how to keep connected and involved during these difficult times. The TAT has asked committees to encourage members to sign up for the newsletter, so I will sign off with a link to our national U3A website:

www.u3a.org.uk

Either click on the link (or copy and paste it into your address bar) and then scroll down to the foot of the main page. Under the heading Quick Links there is a heading Newsletter Signup. Click on this and you are taken to a page where you can input your details and receive the newsletter.
I hope you find this helpful.

Stay well and safe!

Mary Cole,
Chairman

=======================================================================

The U3A offers learning and social activities for those not in full-time gainful employment.  Skills and experiences are shared among the members and it is an excellent opportunity to meet local people in similar circumstances to your own.

Lea Valley U3A was the first to be set up in this area, in 1992, and we welcome members from Broxbourne, Hoddesdon, Nazeing and surrounding areas.  In fact, you are very welcome to join us wherever you live, and whatever your age.

Our main meetings are held on the second Monday of the month (no meeting in December), at 'the Spotlight' in Hoddesdon (formerly Broxbourne Civic Hall).
Dates of forthcoming meetings are shown in the latest Newsletter which can be found on our News page which you can get to by clicking on the "NEWS" link at the top of the table in the margin. Members are invited to arrive from 1pm onwards to visit group tables and have a cup of tea or coffee, and lunch if they wish, in the Bistro Bar.  The speaker will begin at 2pm, the subject of our talks ranging from “Weird & Wonderful Weddings” to “Wildlife in Tanzania”, and everything else in between!

Lea Valley U3A has over 50 interest groups including Antiques and Collectables. Pilates, Keep Fit, French Boules, Exploring London, Reading for Pleasure, Walking Groups, Craft Groups and Pub Lunches, to name a few.  Click on "GROUPS" in the margin for a full list. There is something on offer for everyone, both ladies and gentlemen.  Depending on the number of members, some groups meet in small halls around the area, or in private homes.

Annual membership is 15 and forms can be collected at our meetings.  If you want to see what we do, you are welcome to come along as a visitor and pay just 2, which will be deducted from your membership fee if you do decide to join.

You can download and print a copy of the current Membership Form by clicking on the link below. You can then either send this to the Membership Secretary or bring it with you to a meeting.
